Announce players in?
Welcome new players
"Welcome one and all, to the sleepy town of XXX. We have cheap wine, dark forests, suspicious locals, and one problem: the mayor has just been found torn to shreds by werewolves. Nothing a little mob justice can't fix, though."
"Welcome everyone to the town of XXX! Some of you are secretly werewolves and just murdered the mayor. Grab your pitchforks and torches, because it's time to play...Werewolf!"
Ask for new players
"Before we get started, whomst among you have no idea how to play? Please everyone answer on your devices."
"Okay I got bored waiting. I'm just gonna play the tutorial to punish you."
Introduce rules (teams, win conditions, voting)
"Alright, listen up: you'll be secretly divided into two teams, the town and the werewolves. The werewolves start outnumbered 5 to 2. If the werewolves ever equal the town, they win. If the werewolves all die, the town wins."
"During the day, everyone gets to discuss and vote on one player to be executed. Then it's night-time, and the werewolves come out to kill one player! I'll be giving everyone else little challenges during the night to keep you all entertained. Also so you can't tell who's a werewolf by who's using their phone."
"The trick to the game is, the werewolves can only win if they can trick the town into turning on each other! Helpfully, only they know who each other truly are. I'll also reveal what someone was when they die."
"To make things more interesting, some of you will also be given a secret role that lets you do other secret things at night. You'll learn more when that happens."
"Also, a ground rule: when it comes to what's displayed on people's devices, no showing, no peeking. Poker rules. Feel free to make claims about what you have, so long as you can't prove it."
"Alright, that's the rules. Any questions, please ask whichever of you was actually listening."
Introduce roles
Open Game
"So, this is an open game, which means you all know what roles will be assigned, but not which players will get them. So, here they are." [display roles]
"Everyone take a good look, okay? I'm not reading these out. Also you can see this list again in the encyclopedia on your device if you want." [hold for at least 10 seconds.]
Closed game
"Alright, this is a closed game, so I'm keeping you all in the dark about what roles I'm handing out. Just be assured that the game is theoretically balanced. Probably. You can consult the encyclopedia on your device at any time if you want to know what's out there."
Hand out roles
"Each of you is about to receive two of these cards on your devices. One shows your alignment, the other what role you have. Please take a careful look at them before continuing."
"Wow, slow readers, huh? I'm just gonna continue."
Hand out clues
"Oh, one more thing: I'm gonna be handing out some clues to get you started. They'll be things like, 'there's a good chance XXX is the Doctor' or 'YYY is looking awfully hairy today'. Remember, don't show them to anyone! Everyone please check your device to see if you have a clue."
Start day 1
"That's everything! It's the start of day 1, so you have 5 minutes to discuss and vote for who to execute. Happy hunting!"
Mid day
"It's noon, everyone. You have 2 more minutes to submit your vote, or else. Use the vote button
